Today I was looking at the Facebook profiles of three siblings and noticed, to my surprise, that despite being only a few years apart in age, they had each chosen a different hometown, one for high school, the other for junior high, and the last for elementary school. So my question is this: At what age is your place of residence most instrumental in the formation of a sense of self? Is age even the most important factor? Could it be more a matter of specific life events and personal preferences?

I think anywhere from 10-18, depending on a persons life. I moved to the suburbs when I was about 9 or 10 but I always went back to Baton Rouge, sometimes 3 times a week, so Baton Rouge is my hometown even thought I went to middle school and high school out in the burbs.

Being that I absolutely hate the city I was born in, Shreveport LA, and have equal disdain for the city I grew up in, Marshall TX...New Orleans is my hometown

I moved to Houston at a pretty young age so most of my memories are from Houston and not the town I moved from. With Houston being so big and spread out I don't really see the entire city as being my hometown as there are large areas of the city I've never even seen. I see my suburb as more of my hometown.

Whatever town I happen to be in at the moment is my hometown and has been like that since I was born.

Well for me it's impossible for me to narrow it down to one place. I have a lot of affection for a few adopted cities. I was born in Salem, Massachusetts and that is the hometown that I claim and it's close to my heart. As an infant I moved up to West Newbury, MA and spent my most formative years there through late adolescence. It's a semi rural exurb that grew from dirt roads into cul de sacs over time. I loved it as a kid and thought it was boring as a teenager.

I moved out to Seattle in my early twenties and had my fun wild oat years out there so I look back on that experience fondly. I moved back to Salem again and spent some life altering years there. After a while I needed to bounce and go spend some years out in the desert. I'm pretty content here but I definitely miss my home town. It was sort of an epiphany to me that Salem is my home town at age 30.

My hometown is Singapore.

It's been instrumental in my identity and sense of self since day one.

Lived in several other cities (total of three countries) and only claim to be Singaporean, city wise. Wouldn't claim anything else. So 0-6 on the poll.

I chose "age isn't the most important factor."

I was born in New Orleans and we still have lots of family ties to that area, but as a military family we moved a lot when I was a kid. I've lived in probably 12 states and I can't even count how many cities and towns -as well as two foreign countries.

But I've lived in East Texas now for twenty years, so I consider this area "home." That being said, there's a lot of truth to "home is where the heart is." Every place I've lived I've considered my "hometown."
