What city in the U.S. do you think would be the best to be homeless? Where they have tons of shelters, mass transit, soup kitchens, homeless orginziations and services. And where you won't be hasseled by the cops, the locals, or other homeless.
A little about me - I'm a 37 year old single white male, just lost his job and about to be homeless.
This is based on my own personal experience in the 90's as a homeless teenager. I bounced around a lot, but the most friendly area to homeless was San Francisco and Berkeley. From what I have read, Berkeley is not the place to be anymore, so I would say San Francisco.
The biggest issue is that you would have to compete with so many other homeless there. SF is a mecca for the homeless, both youth and adults. And the weather is not the best either. I got caught in a 3 day rainstorm with no place to squat (an empty building or shelter that you illegally enter). All my clothes were soaked. I went to a laundromat off from Haight to dry my clothes, and the owner threw all my clothes out of the dryer, and said if I wanted to dry them, I would have to wash them first.
That being said, there are some people in SF who are sympathetic, but I think the system there is being overwhelmed by the homeless population. There are not enough resources.
What you should do is Google homeless camps. There is a fairly large one in Memphis, I believe. For the most part, the people of homeless camps work. You could have your own space, and be able to put your life back together.
I would avoid most of the north between the months of October-April. The cold temps will kill you.
You could also try Las Vegas. They hire people for cash daily to hand out flyers for nude clubs, etc, but you gotta get there early. If you do that, you could have enough for a hotel room daily, albeit not the best.
Somewhere warm where you won't freeze to death in the Winter.
