Virginia has Northern Virginia which is connected to the DC Area, a Northeastern city and Virginia shares portions of the Delmarva Peninsula along with Delaware and Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay with Maryland, both of them geographically Northeastern. So what happens if this nation ever splits into 4 nations which are named the Northeast, the Southeast, the Southwest and the Northwest? Which new nation would Virginia would go to? The Northeast.
There may be reasons to argue that VA is a "northeasternish" southern state but two sparsely populated counties on the Delmarva Peninsula is pretty weak. The Delmarva Peninsula is the most culturally-southern part of MD and DE. This accent in Maryland doesn't sound the least bit northern:
This thread is titled very badly. The inside, unasked, question appears to be: "Can we consolidate enough Electoral College votes to leverage control of future national elections?" Nice try but the rest of the non "13 northern states" are not very likely to go along with that sort of power grab. Besides... which of the states mentioned will need to give up sovereignty to allow which state legislature to initially assume control. I seriously doubt that CT RI or Delaware come off as winners of that lottery.
There are big states such as California, Texas and Florida which counts large populations and areas but there are 13 separate Northeastern States plus DC. The 13 Northeastern States and DC is actually more connected to each other than California and Texas metropolitan areas does. There is a virtually continuous developed corridor which runs from Portland to Virginia Beach with Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington as the centers of the Northeast. Why we don't recognize it as one state like California and Texas? I think the Northeastern Corridor's quality of life would be better than having the corridor in 13 separate states. The states I'm proposing to merge are ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, DE, PA, WV, MD, DC and VA.
I can see the idea here. But I think there are too many assumptions made about the Northeast. I'm trying to imagine Massachusetts wanting to merge with Connecticut. Or Vermont with Maryland. Furthermore the state of New York might as well be split into NYC and the state of NY. The Northeast is full of different factions and subcultures. That's part of the beauty of the Northeast. Also, you ever heard of Pennsyltucky? Not to mention that much land would put quite a strain on governments to govern. That's why this country is a federation.
