Whu ... ?! America's cities didn't turn "ghetto"' because "ghetto folk" moved in and ruined things for everybody, they turned "ghetto" because middle class WHITE people panicked and abandoned perfectly decent neighborhoods at the first sign of diversity, which often caused real estate values to plummet and retailers to make a mass exodus. The end result: Formerly nice areas were, within a very short period of time, reduced to less-than-desirable, and the underclass took over.
See how that works?

As usual, it takes a lot of factors to cause multi-generational decay and disinvestment, not the least of which was driven by White Flight. Don't forget to blame CURRENT homeowners/occupiers to total neglect of their properties as well, or are they off the hook?
It's simply never as simple as "it's their fault", yet I hear this all the time (from both sides)!
I think this does have a lot to do with Black people, or rather non-Black peoples' misconceptions about Black people.
Here in Cincinnati, the poorest and most run-down urban populations are Appalachian. There is far more blight and crime in the Appalachian neighborhoods than the Black neighborhoods. That said, no one ever talks about the Appalachian communities while the Black communities are always discussed with contempt. There is clearly a double standard that falls along racial lines.
I think a lot of perceptions of cities like Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia as dangerous has to do with a concentration of Black people. I grew up in a Black neighborhood on the North side of Milwaukee and I can't begin to fathom why people think 10 Black people enjoying each others company on a sidewalk is somehow a threat, but I know that mentality is out there in the psyche of so many that its impacts are tangible.
I'll piggy-back this and add that segregation is a big factor with crime, and conversely, integration is a factor that leads to less crime. At least, this is my personal belief, but I'm sure it's not altruistic.
Can we get a rundown on where those crimes are committed? Like another poster said, I think there is more crime in inner cities than rural areas because there is more going on, more to steal, gangs, etc. Are there any crime stats on poor blacks living in rural areas throughout the country?
Also, you did not post proof about how prone to crime and homicide black people are. What you posted is how prone to crime and homicide impoverished black people are. If took a look at the stats of upper and middle class blacks vs. impoverished blacks, you'd notice that there is a drastic difference in crime rates between the two groups.

To say that poverty is the problem is an insult to all of the poor folk worldwide who've never committed a crime against anyone. Black folk are screwed up because it is a sociopolitical and socioeconomic necessity that we be screwed up. That is mental illness! Please don't tell me about the many Black Madonnas that are still sacred in parts of Europe. They know the truth, we don't! We call each other the most degrading name ever invented! That is mental illness!
Collectively, we are mentally ill! Indeed, we are sick in the head. The mind controls the body! Hence, our collective behavior.
It is very true what you are saying, the problem is that most people think that inanimate objects such as material things are the only solution to crime, unhappiness, mental illness, internal poverty, and many other inadequacies.

That's a deeper issue than even poverty. Materialism is something that we have always had a tough time explaining and a tougher time coping with, and that doesn't look like it will change any time soon.
