There are major cities that have more loved and have very few folks that would say that they hate the cities..Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver come to mind.
Interesting point that I think is accurate. It may have to do with latent racism in the US. Those three cities are very white.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Phoenix. Probably one of the most polarizing cities in the country. On these boards it is pretty much universally loathed but to many it is one of the most desirable cities in the country.
Los Angles, Chicago and Dallas all come to mind. Also , Seattle and Portland, due to the crappy weather. Those two cities seem to be liked more by people that have never spent much time in them, than the actual people that live there. Both those cities have a lot to offer if you can get over the traffic and long periods of overcast weather.
But, I rarely if ever hear anybody loving theses places. It's pretty much always in the opposite direction. I'm sure these are fine cities but except for Pittsburgh, the others don't seem to get much love.
Probably depends on your geographic location and what cities are near you and the overall view from the people around you about other cities.... for example:
People who love NYC probably hate Boston and Philly. People who love Boston probably hate NYC... people who love Philly probably hate Pittsburgh... people who love Pittsburgh probably hate Philly.
Geographical "rivalries" you can call it...
