Some smaller town on the coast of Oregon. I've lived in Washington for a long time and I never liked the slush in winter much but I loved how green all the trees were and hilly it was. Oregon is similar in a lot of ways with a slightly warmer climate. There are some great driving roads on the west coast
I LOVE Healdsburg, CA area - amazingly beautiful country and charming town, but, ultimately it would be too small of a place to live full time assuming I can't also have a place in the city. Other than that Oakland intrigues me as an potential great place to live, more so than San Francisco. I haven't been there near as many times as I have SF but when I've gone I've really been impressed. I'm a bit of a lurker in the Oakland forums and appreciate the pride and descriptions of what seem like ideal neighborhoods with stunning period houses- especially in the foothills. It seems to me to be the most dynamic city in California right now. I think the crime situation while definitely real is like in most cities; easily avoided. Being a Northern California native it is hard for me not to be drawn back to that area.
But I do live in just about the best, and I imagine most Oakland-like (nice) neighborhood of San Diego. Charming period houses, vibrant and defined village area, on a canyon, super close to downtown, which, while not as happening as the Bay Area, can still hold its own if you know where to go and pay attention to what's out there and going on. And it's pretty damn magical to be in the ocean in about 10 minutes from my house and enjoying the waves, snorkeling above the sea bed and sometimes even swimming with sharks (harmless leopards) dolphins and seals. So, for now I'll stay just where I'm at.
I also love aspects about just every other part of the country but I've traveled and experienced most of them enough to compare and am pretty sure I would not necessarily find them as ideal, even though I might thoroughly enjoy living in just the right neighborhood somewhere else.
Since I can live anywhere and recently moved to Chicago, I guess that answers it. I'm cool with most cities in the Midwest though... like the people, change of seasons, food and because it's "home" for me.
If it were just 1 location, San Diego. For split seasons, Seattle in summer and Scottsdale, Az in winter.
