The tiny towns in the Midwest I've been too seem to be 90% middle class with few very wealthy or poor residents. Southern small towns are usually more divided among economic lines and a good and bad side. Here in KY you'll have one side of town with large well maintained homes and the other side is dilapidated mobile homes
Rural Midwest has an African American population that is generally insignificant, and in some counties, would round off to zero, while some rural Southeastern counties have an African-American majority, and all have a significant black presence. I think that has a very high impact culturally, economically and politically, that overrides practically every other consideration.
