Hi guys, I could really use some advice trying to plan my next move in life. I've lived in chicago my whole life but the past few years I've gotten tired of the crime issues that plague the city even in "good" neighborhoods especially in the summer. In terms of effecting me personally, I'm talking about all the armed robberies, assaults and low police presence that has become the norm. In terms of the overall city well, the violence is just horrible and sad. I've ended up dreading every summer, which sucks. I also have wanted to move east for awhile, to look for possible job opportunities (in publishing) and to be near friends. Is there anywhere in the east I could live with no car and without the above crime situation looming around? I'm not a huge fan of Brooklyn or Manhattan--some more far out parts of queens are nice, but the rent there is sooooo high, I'm wondering if there's anywhere else in the east anyone recommends! I have visited boston as well and thought it was very nice.

Parts of the DC metro area would work well for you which while on the more expensive side aren't on the NYC end of the spectrum. Northwest DC has a number of safe neighborhoods that work well in terms of relative safety at night and living carless. Check out Connecticut Heights, Friendship Heights, Tenleytown, Glover Park and Cleveland Park. Neighboring Arlington VA suburbs which are very close to Downtown DC, has some excellent choices as well...check out the neighborhoods of Courthouse, Clarendon, Virginia Square and Rosslyn. If you want to see your rent drop a bit further the easily Metro (subway) accessible suburban neighborhoods of East Falls Church and Vienna in Virginia or Rockville and White Flint in Maryland are good options too.

Perhaps parts of Westchester County north of NYC like the northern most portion of the Rivertowns. Nyack in Rockland County would fit, as could some communities in Northern NJ.

Providence and parts of the Philadelphia area may be options as well.

In terms of the Northeast Corridor as a whole, the ranking from high to low is:

Baltimore
Washington DC
Philadelphia
Boston
NYC

Chicago doesn't report rape properly to be included in national crime rates, but if it did, it would be higher crime than Boston and NYC, but lower crime than Philly, DC, or Baltimore.

I agree....Rockville Centre is a good example with it's downtown and residences walking distance from the LIRR station.

Huntington and Babylon would also work on Long Island.
