Why are people posting several cities beyond #3? That opens a whole can of worms. The question of the thread is what city is #3, not #10.
And for the love of you know who, Orlando is known around the world... Disney World yes, but I don't know any international people who equate the two. I have heard Florida as a state, but not Orlando.
Anyways, for the thread, it really could be a draw between Chicago, SF, Miami and DC. Not Vegas.

If going by just how famous/infamous/well known internationally, as opposed to a place to visit as a tourist, I wouldn’t be surprised if Washington D.C. actually eclipsed Los Angeles for the #2 spot. The US projects a lot of power globally, and much of it stems from Washington...
I’d hazard a guess that around the world, Hollywood = movies.
I say DC, which is always referred to as Washington and never as DC.
Very often US news abroad are related to the president and the president is in DC, that's why.
In my travels abroad, due to the internet and American mass media, more foreigners have heard many more of our cities than we realize.
I don't understand "ranking" them because most likely, all these cities have been heard of. Are we talking about how well someone might know about the city or just name recognition?

Probably more than just the name.
For example, Boston and Philadelphia are known name-wise pretty much everywhere, but how many people internationally can discuss facts or knowledge about those cities. Obviously someone well traveled will understand the historical significance, but an average person, probably not.
Its like Americans viewing other cities. I'm sure most Americans have heard of Stockholm, Copenhagen, Prague, Beijing, etc. but do they know anything about them? Probably not.

Short distance flights (meaning under 7/8 hrs) to Europe, South America/ Caribbean matters a lot here. DC simply is the capital of this nation and Washington is mentioned in newscasts more than any city not named New York City.
