Foreign influences on the city:
I am looking for a city more influenced by Canada than Mexico. I lived in Southern California for a short while and didn't enjoy the hispanic influence. I am not racist in that respect and I have taught in Argentina for a few years after college, but I prefer Canadian culture overall as it reminds me of my home state's culture.
Wow. I feel the same way and Canadian culture isn't discussed on these forums much. I didn't realize there would be such a big difference until I lived in the Southwest. Now I refuse to live below the 40th parallel.
If you didn't mind winter then I would suggest Ann Arbor, Buffalo, or upper NE, including Portland (Maine).

Ikr! I wouldn't go as far as saying anything below the 40th parallel is "foreign" but certainly California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas feel alien to me. I also don't feel right in the South, hence my move. I only consider the South anything Virginia and below... Not the Mason Dixie Line.
I would be interested to hear your comments on this culture difference the only other person who has noted it!
The weather factor, aside from humid heat, isn't too important. Snow isn't desirable but as long as the other parts are right, I am fine to go
If you do move to Chicago, live as close as humanly possible to that lake! Yes, Chicago does get hot and humid, but it's literally 10 degrees cooler on the lakeshore, and there's nearly always a refreshing cool breeze.
I am surprised the OP even had to ask, the answer is pretty much limited to the Pacific Northwest...
If you want to go cheaper, Eugene or Salem. (I hope they do not do any gun control measures, or I have to take them off of my potential list.)
