Older cities suffer the most from suburbs. Newer cities don't seem to be affected quite as much. Just look at Atlanta. That city has only 9% of its overall metropolitan population, but the city overall still appears to be quite healthy. On the contrary, some cities in the North have more than 9% living in their core cities, yet they look like Baghdad did in 2003.

Of course! What would happen to Friday nights if there wasn't a high school football game to watch? Someone might have to...gasp...pick up a book!

My "ideal" existence will be in a city/ region that has:

- the Falls/ Winters of Southern California
- the summers of Seattle
- with the beaches of Fort Lauderdale without the attitude of (many/ transplanted?) Floridians
- the recreation options of Colorado & the Pacific NW
- the food of the U.S. South & the shopping malls of Dallas
- efficiency of North Easterners (in terms of things getting done quickly but thoroughly)
- but whose citizens have Texan/ Southern-style charisma & gregariousness
- and politeness & peacefulness of Midwesterners/ Oregonians
- education level of Minnesota with Washington, DC-level wages with Oklahoma cost of living of everyday goods & living expenses & Mountain state safety
- vibrant downtown of San Fran, Chicago & NYC & cultural sensibility of Boston with the down-to-earthness of Atlanta (compared to other big cities)
- suburbs/ suburban spaciousness like those of North Fulton County, Atlanta (like Alpharetta/ Roswell, GA)
- and will not at all resemble Detroit/ Buffalo/ Tampa & other terrible spots I've visited before...

We can all dream right?
And if only dreams and candy-coated rainbows were real.....unfortunately, we live in a real world of joy, pain, birth, and death....nice to fantasize though

An intriguing idea. I wonder what such a city would be like, and how long it would survive? I can't think of a single city that doesn't have suburbs. Even city's like Jacksonville (which includes a huge amount of acreage as part of the official city limits) still has suburbs.

Cultural offerings
Reliable public transportation
Located on a large body of water
Vibrant entertainment scene
Desirable, livable downtown
Good public schools, libraries, hospitals, higher education, city services
Non corrupt local government
Multi ethnic/cultural population
Car optional living
Adequate green space and city parks
Suburbs void of "cookie cutter" sub developments
world-class architecture
excellent healthcare system
a truly international airport to avoid having to transfer flights when traveling
A solid 911 and emergency system
24 hour food and shopping options for late night snacks and when you need to buy diapers at 3 a.m. or buy some cold medicine in the wee hours of the night
A progressive city government
An ample safe water supply
Few natural disasters
Adequate homeless shelters and good social services network for the poor
A city that provides its citizens with a plethora of options in all aspects of life; housing, education, arts, jobs, social, health, transportation
Good amount of private owned businesses, for instance, family owned restaurants versus all national chains

Oh man, that would be quite a dream for me.

-streets don't change names and are straight
-mass transit to anywhere at any time, with electrified busses and hybrid taxis
-no home sellers and buyers creating segregation by ethnicity or economic class.
-Public/Low income housing would be super spread out on small blocks, unlike the towering crap in New York, Chicago, or Philly.
-suburbs only allowed if planned around mass transit
-No single home lots would be more than one acre.
-Parks would be all over the city to compensate for small yards.
-Parking lots would be banned, with only parking decks allowed to save space.
-Drug dealers would be locked up for life if they crossed city limits.
-more than one downtown with many well-designed skyscrapers
-skyscrapers and small homes for people without children
-minimal eminent domain, none for highways
-nuclear breeder and solar power to reduce pollution and brownouts
-airport connected to high speed rail to replace short flights with high speed train
-security in train, bus and airplane terminals not by the TSA but competent and trained people with good and operating equipment

I am right wing economically, neutral socially, so
-business-friendly government
-businesses encouraged to help fund social programs
-partly private health and education with businesses' support
-have hospital charge higher fees for people and busineses who made themselves unhealthy to lower fees for people who didn't
-nonprofit homeless shelters and soup kitchens run by volunteer businesses
-a mayor who actually listens to and obeys the voters
-citizens who understand civic responsibility and help social services
-government indifferent to religious symbols on public property
-no banning art, books, etc beyond middle school and in museums
-censorship only where it's unavoidable that kids will be around, like on streets
-no smoking, drinking, or littering outside of private homes and businesses
-guns legal, but extensive training required before purchase, and no criminal record ever
-have businesses fire and jail all rioters somehow, but let peaceful protests go unrestrained
