For what it's worth the song "I'm at the combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" was made by New Yorkers referring to a location(s) in NYC. Those combo places don't really count as a restaurant IMO, though.
Found 26 Taco Bells in NYC, though occasionally Google Maps lists ones that are closed. Found 9 in Chicago. So roughly about the same per capita, but less per area. 16 Pizza Huts in NYC, 9 in Chicago. [including combination ones]

Where'd you hear that from? Pizza Hut seems to have declined in general, but maybe I have a regional bias.
Lol, Dallas and Austin are nowhere near West Texas. And we have Culvers here too. As a matter of fact, I'm about 10 minutes away from a Culvers and two minutes away from an In N Out.
I was asking if they're only in western TX, not stating it. I've never been to In N Out and have only been to TX once so I didn't know.
I would also agree that not all mom and pop cafes are great. We were on our way from Baltimore to Harrisburg and got off the interstate and drove at least a mile to this dinner looking place in York, PA. There were cars out in front and it looked like a good local place for dinner. The food was very mediocre and I am not sure the service was all that great as well. It was a big disappointment. I am sure there has to be some great local places in York.
On another note, Blake's Lotaburger in New Mexico is a statewide chain that is now branching out to El Paso. They serve very good green chile cheese burgers. We also had great blueberry shakes the other day. Very tasty. There is an argument about which is better: Blake's or Whataburger . Most Texans agree on Whataburger and New Mexicans say Blake's.
Now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing a Cracker Barrel that wasn't on an interstate. I only go there for breakfast. Their pancakes are delicious!!!

Dallas isn't west Texas. There are numerous ones in Dallas. And there's one being built in Tyler which is north EAST Texas. Looks like this chain is moving east.

I TOTALLY don't get the Whataburger love! I'm a DQ girl myself if I want a fast food burger, which is pretty rare.
West Virginia has Tudor's Biscuit World, which is based on biscuits, sausage gravy, et al. They have a breakfast and dinner menu also. They are almost exclusively in WV, but there are a few in Ohio and Kentucky. I go there when I'm back home, but all I get usually is biscuits and gravy. Shoney's also started out in WV.
In Texas you have places like Whataburger and Chicken Express, Chick-fil-A before it spread north ... Up here we have places like Culver's, that specialize in Cheese Curds and Milkshakes, Butter burgers, we also have Maid-Rite, home of the loose-meat sandwich.
These of course are North Central and South Central comparisons, probably completely different than Southeast and Northeast.
