I am overwhelmed with choices and at a loss. Prefer coastal waves to gulf calm. Want to rent it out full-time until I retire in a few years and then half the year (peak season) thereafter. Want to be right on the ocean. No more than $300k. City has to have all of the usual amenities and be 30 minutes or less away.
Any and all suggestions (preferably with reasons given) welcome; thanks!
There's no small towns less than 30mins away from a big city, that's a suburb.
You're also pretty much limited to Florida unless Savannah and Charleston are big to you.

Pretty much this. Wilmington, Savannah and Charleston are your best bets, but I have a feeling that they may lack the "amenities" to which you refer. The Southeastern coasts tend to be VERY rural; people moving into those areas expecting a lot of infrastructure are setting themselves up for disappointment.
Don't want to go TOO far north, as I'd like to have some "moderate winter" snowbirds renting; want it as booked up as possibly until I retire (a year-round tenant would be great, but I imagine that would also necessitate living within easy commuting distance of a city). Tampa, St. Pete, and Sarasota all sound good but, again, that's the gulf and not my preferred coast. Believe it or not, I'm considering Myrtle -- condos sure are a lot cheaper there than on Folly -- but no big city nearby. Tourists wouldn't mind, but I might after six months! Also Florida seems to offer the most in terms of tax breaks for retirees. Amelia Island looks a bit exclusive?

There are some "exclusive" neighborhoods on Amelia Island proper, but Fernandina Beach (separate city) is not what one would call exclusive, though still very desirable and yet affordable. I think it's worth looking into (hence it's mention), as it would fulfill your criteria quite well.
