Hi all,
Am about to graduate college...am looking to start my life somewhere affordable but also somewhere where things are 'going on' for 20-somethings. I have a degree in marketing so I'm interviewing lots but it looks like I may have to go somewhere first before I get an offer. Am thinking seriously about Atlanta. Any advice? Thank you!! This is a great site!!

Atlanta's a hotspot for new grads. If you're serious about coming here, you should try to come in weekend of March 28th for Making It in the City LIVE Atlanta (www.makingitinthecity.com), a conference for people just like you who are moving to 'big and expensive' cities nationwide. There's also a big PR conference in February through PRSA but focus is only on PR jobs.

Everyone I've ever known who's gone to Atlanta absolutely loves it.

And everyone I know who grew up in Atlanta is chomping at the bit to get out! I fled North at 18, my brother is doing the same, and all of my friends who could get scholarships up North that would compete with the Hope did the same.

I don't know what all the fuss about Atlanta is about. I suppose if you're into clubbing, drinking, etc then it's OK. But I find those types of activities less than attractive. Beyond that, not much else to do and you need a car to do it in anyway.

I'd recommend Nashville, Atlanta, or Charlotte, and if you really want to live on the coast, I'd also recommend Savannah, Georgia or Charleston, South Carolina. Daytona Beach, Florida I've heard is great too.

Don't know where you are moving from so I can't comment on the affordability as it may relate in comparison between where you are and here, but I would recommend Charlotte or Raleigh, North Carolina.

Thanks, everyone. It's definitely coming down to Atlanta or Charlotte. afj131, will look into Nashville. Sweettea, just got a ticket for that event in Atlanta! I'm trying to do my 'homework' so my decision is a little bit easier come April. Thanks for all of the great advice!

I think Atlanta is a great city for a young professional. There's much to do and it's easy to travel to other areas of the south. There's great job opportunities in that area. The city itself is too large for me, but I can certainly see the draw for a young person in your situation.

I'll give a thumbs up to Nashville too! My son lived down summer before last and I visited often. He loved it! I found it to be a very easy city to navigate in for a place its size. There are lots of opportunities there and close by. Similar to Atlanta, it's easy to go lots of other places - accesses to your interstates is great! Weather slightly cooler in the summer too with mild winters.
