I LOVE geography and literally have the US map memorized in my head, probably since the first grade. But I've realized overtime that the average joe could not tell some states apart. I'm also surprised at how often Iowa is confused with Ohio!

I have a friend originally from Iowa and he says people get it confused with Idaho all the time. He will tell people he's from Iowa and very often they will say "oh the potato state, famous potatos".

Yeah, Iowa gets confused for Ohio and Idaho all the time. I really don't get it. We aren't that close to either, especially Idaho.

I guess a lot of people are really ignorant of geography in general.

what's weird to me is that Iowa corn and Iowa corn fed beef are famous as brands in a way very similar to Idaho Potatoes.

Northern definitely. But the idea of North and South is different in the Great Plains (including Texas) than further east in the U.S.

It’s the Is and the Os. And the three syllables. They confuse people.

This is just one plain weird thread. I am surprised so many have responded to it, but then again, here I am responding to it.

South Dakota is a northern State. Eastern South Dakota could be considered part of the midwest, but northwestern midwest. Western South Dakota has mountains. I am surprised there is any question about this.

Whoever voted "Northern" is so wrong. I mean, South Dakota has "South" in its name.

That's why North Carolina, where much of my kin is from, will always be Yankees.

I don't think that's true nationally. Once you get out of the central US, most people have no idea where Iowa is or what happens there, in my experience.

This is very true. Amarillo and Fargo have much more in common than say Boston and Charlotte.

South Dakota would be akin to South Carolina, while North Dakota would be akin to Virginia. Sioux falls is the Greenville of SD, while Willison is the VA Beach of ND.
