Talking where you like to live

I am so happy to see such positive responses and pride in where people live not only live in the U.S. but around the world! If you were happy with my starting this conversation from the beginning,... please add to my positive reputation...it's been awhile!

I must admit though, one of the great aspects is that we are spoiled with the best of 3 worlds....in Jersey, you get the shore (beaches), the fresh, peaceful air of the mountains, and the excitement of the city (we're squooshed between NYC and Philly). Take your pick!!!

Chicago, Illinois

1. The lakefront. It never fails to amaze me how beautiful Lake Michigan is.

2. The neigborhoods and architecture. There's always something interesting and beautiful to see, even in many of the suburbs.

3. You will never be bored. Massive museums, non stop performing arts calendar, festivals, shopping, simply exploring the city. If you do get tired of Chicago, there are countless destinations nearby for a day or weekend trip, from other big cities to quaint small towns. If you need to travel farther, we have perhaps the best, and cheapest, air service in the country.

4. The food. First there's the traditional comfort foods, pizza, hot dogs etc. As for fine dining, this is the best city in the country. Many restaurants at least as good as New York or LA but with more moderate prices and much less pretensious service.

5. The diversity. There are few places where you won't experience different cultures and languages. And this also contributes to number 4, huge variety of awesome ethnic restraurants.

6. Commuter rail, the extensive system makes getting to downtown from the 'burbs relatively painless.

7. The people. It's not as true as elsewhere in the Midwest, but people are pretty friendly, not too much in a hurry, and very down to earth.

8. This is the city that works. Corruption aside, the city does a great job with services. Many of the main roads are lined with beautiful planters, litter is cleaned up quickly, broken streets lights get fixed promptly. During the 90's we were the only city in the country to embark on a massive program to renovate or build new libraries in much of the city.

9. Speaking of libraries, throughout Chicagoland, libraries tend to be open longer hours, and have more money for new materials, than in many other states. We also have a statewide network of comprehensive community colleges, something else many states lack.

10. In 2016, we'll be hosting the Olympics, and finally showing the world that we are, in fact, a world class city. (hopefully)

If we could clean up the corruption, and get local governments to cooperate and embark on regional planning programs, that would go a long way to solving many of our problems.

I like Gulfport, MS because:

*The ocean!
*Lots of jobs.
*Has a more diverse population than you're likely to find elsewhere in Mississippi, but still retains it's Southerness.
*Proximity to New Orleans, Mobile, and Florida.
*Mild winters.
*Between the casinos, concerts, festivals, etc. there's usually something to do.

Default "I Love L.A."

Even though I just posted a couple of days ago that I can't wait to leave this city, there are benefits...

1. The weather. I even like it when we get ferocious rainstorms in January and February! This includes the marine layer (cloud cover) that cools off the San Fernando Valley in May and June.

2. Shopping - I can go to at least three different Borders Books within a 20 mile radius. Ditto with Target.

3. The freeways really are free, at least in L.A. County (what's a toll?).

4. Proximity to beaches and mountains (although I don't go nearly often enough to either of them).

5. Trader Joe's

6. In-N-Out Burger (and they even pay their employees decently; pay starts at $9.50/hour)

7. There's something for everyone, no matter how weird. (I know, some people wouldn't consider this a good thing!)

8. There's always something to do.

9. Lots of free concerts in the summer at places like Universal City Walk (don't get me started on the cost of parking there, though!).

10. No smoking in restaurants, bars, any public enclosed space. (I went to Vegas recently and thought I was going to choke to death.)

11. Rent control in the City of L.A. (although this only applies to apartments built before 1978).

12. If you want ethnic food, there is *real* ethnic food here!

13. L.A. has a truly international airport with lots of direct flights all over the world. Burbank is a great airport for flying to Vegas, etc.

14. Good healthcare, i.e. UCLA Medical Center, Cedar-Sanai Hospital.

Given time, I could probably think of more things, but this will do for now.

While there are many things that I dislike about living here, and often complain about.. there are some things that make this city great.

Why I love Galveston..

-It's an island! What could be better than that?

-The weather. Yes it can get miserably hot in the summer but the rest of the year here is just wonderful. It never gets too cold and is usually quite mild. We also have a nice seabreeze most of the time that is really enjoyable.

-Diversity. We have such a melting pot of cultures in this area that I find it absolutely fascinating.

-There is always something going on in Galveston. There are so many events and activities year-round that I could never mention them all. Even if there isn't a planned event going on, we have very nice theatres so you're never without entertainment.

-Architecture. Galveston has an abundance of very well preserved historical homes and buildings for those of us who just love to marvel at their beauty.

-And on that note, the History. This island has such a vast history and I am always learning about some new (to me) tidbit into it's past.

-the Ships. One can sit on the beach on the East End and watch the ships of the world pass through the ship channel. Sometimes you can even find foreign items washed up on the beach from these vessels and that's just a delight in itself. I also love to watch the cruise ships coming and going. It's easy to take for granted, but most people can't say they get to see ships like these on a regular basis.

-Birding. I think I read once that 500 species of birds live, winter or migrate through our area. It's a great place for birdwatchers and many people come here for that reason alone.

I'm sure I could think of more.. but that's all for now. It's nice to add something positive for once!

Why I love Naperville, IL:

Where to start, where to start...

1. Fantastic schools. Often rated highest in the region.
2. Awesome shopping and nightlife. You never have to leave the town.
3. Super safe. For its size, its crime rate is superbly low.
4. Downtown. Lively, vibrant, expanding, safe.
5. In the middle of everything.
6. Rated 2nd best city to live in by CNN/Money magazine for several years now.

I grew up in Sherman Oaks. Did you go to High School there? My parents still live in the same house off Hazeltine and Magnolia. I had the worst dream last night though,...I dreamt I had moved back to the Valley...or was it a nightmare? Where do you plan to move next?

Toronto - it's so varied, multicultural. I've had a family doctor who graduated from medical school in Jamaica, wished my Moslem landlord "Eid Mubarak" (he wishes me "Shabbat Shalom"), bought soy sauce in my local "Siu Thai" (supermarket), spoken in German to the Calcutta-born chef at a Bavarian restaurant, etc.
