Redneck but not Southern / Southern but not Redneck (chapel, movies)

I feel like a lot of folks on here think that redneck and Southern are synonyms. Where in fact they're not. It's possible to be redneck and not Southern. It's also possible to be Southern and not redneck.

So, these cities, I think, are the most redneck without being Southern:
1. Bakersfield, CA
2. Tucson, AZ
3. Fort Wayne, IN
4. Spokane, WA
5. Utica, NY

Likewise, these cities, I think, are the most Southern without being redneck:
1. Charleston, SC
2. Savannah, GA
3. Lexington, KY
4. Ashville, NC
5. Chapel Hill, NC

What do y'all think?

I don't know what a redneck is how would one define such a thing? Natives of the South claim to know the difference between a redneck and a hillbilly? I still have no clue. I was born and raised in MA around Boston but my lived in the South for most of my adult life in AL, KY, FL, TX and get along with almost everyone just fine. I love the South, the cost of living is way cheaper than the Northeast, the people are more outgoing and friendly which fits into my extravert nature. The weather is better, its more mild most of the year.. except the summers suck.. too hot and humid but the rest of the year is pretty nice. I love the South, most my family moved from MA or NY to Atlanta and Nashville so they are close by to me in Kentucky. I have not had too many bad experiences with rural southern people.. even being from Boston I usually get along with almost everyone one of them. People just stereotype the south from what they see in Hollywood movies.

I wouldn't call Utica redneck. Maybe some of the rural areas nearby, but not the city.

My ex is from Winfield, NY (like 10 miles outside Utica) and his family is the most redneck I've ever met in my entire life.

Which is exactly my point.....Utica itself is actually a very culturally diverse city of about 60,000, but like you mentioned, some of the rural towns nearby can be quite "country". I will say that Bridgewater, a village right next to Winfield, had a Black mayor in the 1970's and he was from a nearby town originally. So, the people may not fit the negative stereotypes of a redneck.

Michigan and Indiana should definitely be on the list of not southern but redneck.

Maybe you're new to Arizona but Arizonans, in general, consider Tucson to be more liberal than Phoenix.

Well in all fairness to rednecks, some of the most backwoods people I know, are also some of the most kind, accepting, live and let live types I've met. They don't care what my gay ass does They just like to kill deer, and are who I want to be with in case of zombie apocalypse.

Where did rednecks first come from? If it was not the south, then I see the point in this thread. otherwise, people should have known that rednecks migrate too.
