Springfield defaults to Missouri for me. I grew up in the Ozarks and Springfield, MO was our big city. Our TV stations came from there and it seemed so cosmopolitan to those of us in my tiny town of one thousand people.

Illinois, and then MO. However I feel like Springfield, MO is a VERY forgotten place although it is a steady contender in the market of mid-sized metros. I had relatives down there recently and they mentioned that it didn't feel like the midwest down in the lower 1/3rd of Missouri.

Talking about metro's here.
Yup, because metro areas vary in terms of size/infrastructure of the respective city. Some MSAs are anchored by fairly small cities with massive sprawl surrounding, while others are more dense/urban. The MSA designation doesn't provide a true picture in my opinion.

And city limits do?

I voted Illinois because its my state's capital, and because it's the only one that I've been to. You have to drive through it to get to St. Louis, we would take field trips there while in school, etc.

If I didn't live in Illinois though, I probably wouldn't have a preference.

LOL! That was going to be my answer!

But I voted "Illinois" because I am orginally from Chicago.

I think Springfield being the capital of Illinois makes it front and center in a lot of people's minds. Even if it's smaller than the others, my perception is still that it's larger since it's a capital.

I think of Missouri second because my parents attended an Assembly of God church when I was a child and I remember them always saying the organization's headquarters was in Springfield, MO.
