The fact that last year Baltimore was named the fittest city is all you need to know about how ridiculous these rankings are. Now I like Charm City. But fittest city in the USA...come on!!!
Car-culture. Which is why I have no idea why Atlanta is up there, especially with the popularity of grits and things like that down there...
Now how are you going to say something like that? Being a southern city with a car culture has little to do with how fit a city is. Houston is one of the fittest large cities in the nation. In 2006, Houston's average BMI was lower than the national average of 27.
And for the record, grits are not a fattening food. They're actually quite healthy.

And every time I see one of these lists they're always different....

Atlanta has a lot of gyms, a lot of rec. athletic leagues, and with the mountains nearby--a lot of opportunities for outdoor recreation and pursuits.

And so do most American cities. New York has the Catskill Mountains, one of the largest per capita number of gyms in the country, exceptional public transportation, amazing walkability, etc.
I don't see how Atlanta can be above cities such as New York. That is all.

Grits are a fattening food. My aunt is a nutritionist at a university.
Car-cuture is always going to affect a cities fitness even if it's just a .000001% contribution to the total body fat. You can't tell me that guy in Atlanta driving to work everyday is geting better exercise than the New Yorker walking a mile to work every day and having to walk from building to building for meetings then walk a mile (if at his office) back home again. Then always doing the required New Yorker routine of going for a nightly walk around the city and maybe hitting a Yankees game.
Atlanta and Houston? Sorry, I don't see them as more physically fit than New York or even Los Angeles...

You're right and maybe we need to check out which variables and indicators that the MH survey used. I think dining out is a factor--meaning the more you eat out, the fatter the city. New Yorkers love their take-out. Also, the mountains are in closer proximity to Atlanta than they are to New York and the climate in Atlanta is more agreeable for outdoor activity year round versus New York.
What is the secret of Minneapolis? They are the most literate city in the nation, the fourth-fittest city in the nation, and consistently rank in the Top 10 in just about every other positive poll as well.
