I like doing these lists, and I hope you like 'em, too. So to continue with the "Your #1 [item]." thing, here's the state version.

Texas
  • #1 City: (Sports) Houston / (Business) Dallas / (Tourism) San Antonio / (Arts) Austin / (Living) Fort Worth / (Culture) El Paso. I just couldn't pick one. Sorry
  • #1 Past time: High School football
  • #1 Highway: I-35 (from DFW, through Austin, down to San Antone)
  • #1 Sports team: Dallas Cowboys (always)
  • #1 Building: the State Capitol
  • #1 Way of life: Laid Back
  • #1 Current/Former Resident: Beyonce Knowles
  • #1 College: Univ. of Texas at Austin
  • #1 Stereotype: It's Texas. Just pick one....
  • #1 Embarassment: Certain areas that think Texas is still in the 1800's.
  • #1 Good thing: 6 major cities have populations of over 500k, and growing.
  • #1 Bad thing: Texans who worship George W. Couldn't help it.
  • #1 Reason to live here: If you're very patriotic and a football fan, this state is perfect for you.

Let mpope put her spin on it.

TEXAS
#1 City: Houston/Dallas (for different reasons)
#1 Past time: high school football
#1 Highway: I-35 (only north of Austin)
#1 Sports team: San Antonio Spurs (they actually win championships)
#1 Building: Reunion Tower
#1 Current/Former Resident: Beyonce
#1 College: Rice Univ.
#1 Stereotype: That everybody here loves the Bushes.
#1 Embarassment: George W. Bush
#1 Good thing: As if I could actually pick one out of the many
#1 Bad thing: Residents with the Old Texas mindset

LOUISIANA
City: New Orleans (of course)
Past Time: community
Highway: I-10 (at least for south Louisiana)
Sports Team: that's a toughie, I'd go with the N.O. Saints and LSU Football
Building: St. Louis Cathedral at Jackson Square (or the State Capital building in B.R.)
College: my choice, Tulane. Most people would say LSU
Resident: That would either be Bobby Jindal, the governor elect. Or lately Brad Pitt
Stereotype: corrupt hick country people
Embarrassment: Mayor C. Ray Nagin
Good Thing(s): History, natural resources, culture, food
Bad Thing: people that just accept bad things as they are and don't care enough to fight for change
Reason to Live here: besides the food, history, culture...if we can get the mess of a state government worked out, and New Orleans continues to straighten out...watch out. This state under proper management should be an economic powerhouse.

I like Ray Nagin. Most people I know do, also. I wouldn't say he embarasses Louisiana.

Oh but he does. He's a jerk who doesn't live here, who isn't ever out addressing any problems. Runs for TV cameras, and has turned over the day to day operations of New Orleans to Ed Blakely.
NO one likes him. (Except you)

I'd be more than happy to debate the issue with you in the Louisiana forum.

California

#1 City: (Weather) San Diego / (Business) LA / (Tourism) Santa Barbara / (Arts) San Francisco / (Living) Northern San Diego County/ (Culture) San Francisco (sports)- participant sports abound throughout the state but I don't think there is a great interest in spectator sports compared to the rest of the country.
#1 Past time: Depends where you live and your interests. Anything from surfing to Alpine skiing (or both) to the arts depending upon your location and interest. San Diego/Orange County- surfing/beach; San Francisco- eating, hiking, wine-tasting
#1 Highway: Pacific Coast Highway (particularly the Big Sur area)
#1 Sports team: the Lakers in Southern California, the 49rs and Giants in Northern- but specator sports are largely an afterthought here
#1 Building: My vote goes to the Hearst Castle
#1 Way of life: Too varied to generalize. Everything from Hollywood phonies to beach bums to country folk
#1 Current/Former Resident: The Governator
#1 College: I wish I could say it was my alma mater Berkeley (Cal), but Stanford is probably higher rated
#1 Stereotype: Everyone is a hippie/gay/liberal. Totally untrue.
#1 Embarassment: LA racial tensions and riots.
#1 Good thing: So much variety- it is impossible to get bored.
#1 Bad thing: Cost of Living!!!
#1 Reason to live here: The variety of places to see within a day trip and the unlimited number of recreational activities. And of course the weather.

Yeah, now. Hopefully the 'Boys can break that DFW playoff curse and bring home that well deserved 6th Lombardi Trophi.

Arizona
  • #1 City: (Sports) Phoenix / (Business) Phoenix / (Tourism) Sedona / (Arts) Scottsdale / (Living) Scottsdale / (Culture) Bisbee (if you want to explore the Old West)
  • #1 Past time: 4-wheeling in the desert
  • #1 Highway: Route 66 (Okay, decomissioned, but parts still exist in northern AZ)
  • #1 Sports team: Phoenix Suns
  • #1 Building: Mission San Xavier del Bac
  • #1 Attraction (I added this one, haha) The Grand Canyon
  • #1 Way of life: Suburbanite in the greater Phoenix or Tucson metro areas
  • #1 Current/Former Resident: Senator John McCain
  • #1 College: Arizona State University (haha, Go Sun Devils!)
  • #1 Stereotype: AZ is all retirees. NOT true at all, btw. The state's population is actually younger than the national average!
  • #1 Embarassment: There was a fiasco in the early 1990's when the state did not declare MLK day a holiday, drawing national attention.
  • #1 Good thing: The natural scenery and diversity of landscapes.
  • #1 Bad thing: Too much population growth and sprawl.
  • #1 Reason to live here: You love the desert southwest so much that you can't get enough of it just on vacations-- so you live there full time!
