I posted this in another thread a minute ago...I had probably the most fun weekend of my life (outside of skiing in Colorado) in Kansas city. Was just the perfect type of nightlife that I enjoy (jazz, hip-hop, dancing, good beer, variety of places, cool local people to talk to, etc.). And during the day i thoroughly enjoyed exploring, taking photos, drinking good coffee, and enjoying the perfect fall weather.
Other great times were had in Portland, Oregon (IMO the best food, beer, coffee scene in the US.....completely beautiful scenery as well), Washington DC (rented bikes and rode all over the mall at night.....felt like a kid riding my bike just for fun as opposed to just getting from point A to B), Boston (Red Sox game at Fenway, sight seeing, etc) and Chicago (Cubs Game at Wrigley, exploring/photographing, awesome bars, great food, caught a free symphony concert at Millenium park, and sat in Mariano park reading and drinking coffee enjoying the weather and people-watching). All of these are some of my best memories in life.
“Fun” as in “I don’t want to live in and don’t necessarily like it but it’s the kind of place to let your hair down and a quick getaway” sort of place?
In that case: (in no particular order)
New Orleans
Miami
Las Vegas
Atlanta
San Francisco/Oakland
Charleston SC
“Fun” as in “I will want to live in and I like it” (and I did live in a few of them.)
NYC
Los Angeles
Santa Barbara CA
Berkeley CA
D.C
Houston

This one will have to be done into tiers. Btw I'm ranking on the perspective of a visitor.
Extremely fun
Vegas
Miami
NYC
LA
Very fun
Chicago
SF Bay Area
Orlando
NOLA
Philly I consider in between these tiers
Fun
Atlanta
Austin
Houston
Dallas
Nashville
I didn't rank DC because I'm undecided there. It's fun but I find it a bit overrated so I'd rather sit that one out. Atlanta is pushing itself to the next tier more recently.
New York is an urban fun city full of skyscrapers, people taking trains, hustle bustle streets, nightlife.
Los Angeles is laid back fun where you enjoy great weather, beaches, hikes, enjoy eating outside, home BBQ.
Las Vegas is bizarre in your face fun. It's casinos with wild architecture trying to outdo each other with shows, bright lights.
Honolulu is the exotic and nature fun. Love the Asian poly fusion foods, wearing flower prints, swimming with turtles and Nemo, tropical forests and volcanoes.
Other areas I haven't visited or just wasn't fun enough or just ok.
Any city that has good people watching, unique architecture, unique neighborhoods to explore, theme parks and good museums.
NYC
