Yes, there are parts of the central city I wouldn't recommend going to, but to say that the entire city is a no go is 100% incorrect.

Most of the metro's nightlife hot spots are in the city.

I am not sure if Nashville is for you, but the metro population is right at 1.8 million.

Yes I'd think Jacksonville and Ft. Worth would be the most conservatives of all the southern cities in that demographic. But almost any city that size in the south would probably work if you stayed in the suburban parts of town.
