I May need to relocate. NYC dry winters and dry furnace heat killing respiratory
problems. Where are nice places to live, condos or single family homes, near cities or towns, nature, beaches/water,art, bookstores. Need to find a management level position in the developmental disabilities field working with retarded adults/day treatment programs. We love culture, free area things to do, parks, the coast
and want to be near ( somewhat ) to stores....HELP! P.S We have a 12 year old so schools, activities etc would be good too, plus stats on teens, crimes and
especially cost of living as meds eat up the cash.

Thanks...Help!

The south isn't too comforting if you have respitory problems. You may want to check out the west or even mid-west. I think Arizona and Nevada would be wonderful places to live.

If your respiratory ailment is related to dry air, you should be aware that Arizona and Nevada are very dry climates. Somewhere in the coastal southeastern United States might be more to your liking because it is a more moist climate and the coastal areas tend to be a little bit cooler than some of the inland southeast cities.

If you can deal with drier colder climate places with a lot of sun I would look at .
Colorado Springs,CO
St. George, UT
Santa Fe, NM
Phoenix is NOT good for those suffering with respriatory problems because it is a huge metro area along with all of the air quality issues that go along with having a HUGE population.

If you have respiratory problems, you should avoid high altitude cities. Even Denver may be too high at 5280 feet, and COS is 6000 ft.

Somewhere in Florida, either in the panhandle or on the peninsula, will have the conditions you are looking for. Coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina also have the climatic conditions you are looking for. Some places to look into (in Florida, and I will try and post an average 3 bedroom home in a good school district)

Also, Florida has no state income tax, but keep in mind the property tax and homeowners insurance situation. Work in your field shouldn't be too hard to find.

Smaller town
Fort Walton Beach, not sure about prices, but they are low compared to other sections of the state. Life is centered around the (Beautiful) beaches.
Condo/Townhouse/Co-Op - 19 CHATELAINE CIR SE Unit: 19, FORT WALTON BEACH, FL, 32548 - Realtor.com
Around Pensacola, especially Santa Rosa County renowned for solid school performance and a military-based population. I have one very satisfied friend up there, although I have yet to visit.
Single Family Home - 7651 CHABLIS CIR, NAVARRE, FL, 32566 - Realtor.com
Stuart/Martin County Not far from West Palm Beach and the beginning of the South Florida metro, and very good schools, peaceful, feels a world away from the main metropolitan area.

Medium Sized town
Tallahassee, college town, quite a few low crime areas with good school performance ratings, and a fair amount of events in Tallahassee.
Single Family Home - 8747 Minnow Creek Drive, TALLAHASSEE, FL, 32312 - Realtor.com

Brevard County Very well rated school system, close to the beach, home of Kennedy Space Center. About a half hour to Orlando.
Single Family Home - 1926 CAVENDISH CT, ROCKLEDGE, FL, 32955 - Realtor.com

Suburbs of a larger city
Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Tarpon Springs, north Pinellas County A peninsula with water on both sides (as in the county itself, projecting off of mainland Florida). Although it's part of metro Tampa (30 minutes away) it has an authentic small town feel, with well rated schools. A very nice place to be. Worst thing is the especially high homeowners insurance.
Single Family Home - 631 Bonnie Blvd, Palm Harbor, FL, 34684 - Realtor.com

Cooper City, Davie, Weston, Southwestern Broward County We have a seabreeze, very clean air, low rate of crime, a very multicultural community, and a lot going on within 20 minutes. It's outside of Fort Lauderdale/South Florida, which can be pretty intense to a lot of people and tends to polarize.
Single Family Home - 2946 Myrtle Oak Cr, Davie, FL, 33328 - Realtor.com

Seminole County Renowned for a well rated school system and low crime rates, about a half an hour outside of Orlando. Your about an hour to the beach, though. The traffic can get to be overbearing at times.
Single Family Home - LAKE MARY, FL, 32746 - Realtor.com

All of these communities have plenty of family activities and stuff going on.

Gasoline and groceries here tend to be about average price wise.
