These two states don't border NC, but folks have called them the two most similar non-bordering states to NC. Any thoughts?

I guess Maryland, since both md and nc were once part of the original colonies.

Maryland is northern like NJ and NY. AL is the south like NC. No contest.

^ I agree with your last sentence, so other than NC and AL being southern states, do you know of any other bond those two states share?

Only MD bashers would make such a stereotypical comment. MD is more in common with NC than it is with NY.

MD and NC are longer than wide and get wider in their coastal plains regions, while AL (and NJ) is tall and skinny. Both share a border with Virginia, the two states that both have the closest connectivity to. Alabama meanwhile is Deep South, Central Time Zone, does not touch the Atlantic, lacks a city with a strong economy, doesn't have I-95/US 1 running through it, and lacks a major mountain region (only big hills). NC (purple) also is closer politically to MD (light blue) than to Alabama (deep red). While NC and AL both border GA, NC's border to GA is small and sees SC as the state to its south it has more in common though, while AL is often seen as a "less polished GA".

Charlotte is to Baltimore to what RDU is to DC; the former having a decent mix of old and new (with both branches of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond), with the later having government and STEM-type research important. The Outer Banks are to Assategue Island, Wilmington is to Salisbury, and the beaches just north of Myrtle Beach are to Ocean City, MD. Harris Teeter, Food Lion, and BB&T, all NC-based, have at least as strong or a stronger presence in MD than they do in AL. You won't find many Winn-Dixies in NC like you do in AL...

I did a thread a few months back, most similar state to North Carolina that doesn't actually border NC. Seemed like most narrowed it down to Maryland and Alabama, while a few mentioned Kentucky.

NC shares a border with VA, SC, GA, and TN. Those are also the states it's most similar to. That doesn't leave many states in the area, so if either has more in common with NC, it's by default. Neither is very similar.
