I think it's actually an interesting thought experiment to consider how the U.S. would fare if each of the different regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, and West) became different countries.

Of course not. The little mental games people play with this issue is just a game. It seems like these ideas bubble up around some single issue which isn't sufficient to sustain the hardship and cost of separate nationhood. I see the OP isn't advocating - just asking the question.
Maybe it's possible that states will reorganize - combine or divide - but not try to leave.

For a thought exercise it's interesting but I highly doubt the nations would end up looking much if anything like how regions are classified by the census bureau today.

That was tried in 1861. Didn't work out too well.

How or WHY would Canada want to join the U.S? They are quite self sufficient.

As someone mentioned earlier, I think the most likely scenario to happen would be Puerto Rico becoming a state.. and they voted that down several years back. Otherwise, no go on the splitting or merging.

I would like to see more state level autonomy. That doesn't obviate some federal authority, though.

It's called the United States for a reason.

I most certainly hope not, the country would then be entirely too large.

It's 2015 now.

I feel that states should make up their own laws, completely and entirely.

... Gee, thanks. What does that have to do with what I asked? There could still be a country that's referred to as the United States, even if certain regions of what's now the U.S. were separated into their own country, Einstein.

What would be the point in fragmenting the USA into as many as 50 small countries?, the end result would not be a strong country but a collection of bickering banana republics some of whom would be havens to some bizarre philosophies. And what if counties and then municipalities also wanted in on this breakup?Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Better to keep USA as is and work on voting for candidates who represent your views of where you want the country to go.
