Hey there. I'm 25, American and for the last 6 years I've lived in Paris, France. I'm not liking the changes in vibe and values there even before the tragedy in the past year/18 months and as an American I was starting to feel uncomfortable, unsafe and sick of apologizing everytime someone heard my accent. I grew up in Brandon, MS just out of Jackson and I am back here staying with my parents while I figure out my next move.
I have a diploma (2 year degree) in economics from the University of Paris - Sorbonne Campus, TEFL certification, and I obviously speak fluent French. However I did supplement my income quite a bit while I was there by working in the night life sector and I am open to doing that here in America as well.
I have about $8k saved up and I am down to rent a room to start.
I am a musician and I love punk and hard rock music, I need somewhere with an awesome scene with great shows and a cool area catering to that kind of thing (think NYC's East Village before it got gentrified).
I am not interested in the west coast. Also, I want a big city, or a non-college town. I know college towns like Gainesville Florida have good punk scenes but as someone who is not affiliated with a college I will feel out of place and as if "I have no business" in a college town.
I am open to other suggestions but out of these, which is the best. Also, what neighborhood in the city you choose do you recommend for someone like me who wants to be around people like me.
Chicago
Philly
Washington, DC
Boston
Providence
Detroit
Cleveland
I've seen a lot of very similar threads started by brand new members with similar backstories and wanting the same things. What a coincidence.
Are you sure you're not an American living in Montreal about to get deported and looking to move to someplace with a lot of grimy strip clubs?
Or are you not the Russian-Jew-Puerto Rican, living in a rent-controlled apartment on the Lower Eastside, looking to escape New York's gentrification for something gritty?
If you are the same person who started those other two threads, I'd advise you to get a life. If you are not that person, I'd advise you to search for those threads, where you'll find the answers that you need and perhaps your soul mate.
I havent been there in ages, but Chicago used to have a thriving punk scene. We would gather up around the Metro in Chicago, and there would be hundreds upon hundreds of punks going to the shows.
Save money compared to some of the other places you named, make connections, enjoy the city of brotherly love. I have friends really into the scene, and there is pretty much something to do every night of the week.
