Hi,

Just throwing this out there......!!!!

I am searching for a very inexpensive place to live out the last part of my life. I am 58, single and at this point not too worried about the weather. I can live in any kind of climate. I have to live on $500 a month.

Living cheap and maybe even picking a part time job is a priority at this point.

I am willing to look at rv resorts and mobile home communities along with apt. I know I will get more for the money that way.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

At that income, you would qualify for a number of social benefits, such as housing assistance and food stamps. Do your parameters include that?

Ft Myers and Cape Coral Florida have nice rent prices and plenty to do for fun.

I agree that FL would offer a large variety of lifestyle options. I don't know about the summer heat and humidity, but there are certainly worse places to spend retirement on a fixed-income budget

Any smaller city in Texas. It is beautiful there especially East Texas which is much greener and less desert/prairie like. Don't listen these people who say to collect welfare, that's for trashy people. Get a part time job as a greeter at Walmart or something. You can rent a single wide mobile for like $300/$350, if you like dry heat try Phoenix in AZ which has lots of resources for elderly people. If you want to collect welfare...go to CA or NY or MA where that kind of thing is socially acceptable and encouraged. They will give you a free apartment, utilities, food stamps, a mobile phone, bus pass, and cash in exchange for your sense of self worth and dignity.

Mark, what resources for elderly people in AZ? AZ has snowbirds who hopefully bring their retirement money and go home when the weather turns.

I'm from CA and the free apt, utilities, food stamps and cash are mysteries. My mom qualifies for food stamps a whopping $25 in addition to her SS check. She mainly worked as a waitress and my step dad's retirement stopped upon his passing so hers is on the low side.

Those dratted free mobile phones are given out near any social services office in every state. She does not have one but they are there. She pays the senior citizen rate for dial a ride which she sparingly uses for drs visits only. Need a prescription? That adds another $5 for a stop. Each leg 2 blocks or two miles is $5.

I'm honestly not trying to contradict what you've posted just sharing and wondering who offers these services because finding them has been a challenge so far.

If I were you, at $500 a month, I'd become an American Boondocker! Their stories (and the photos) are worth a look...
