north, east and south of New York City, I want to find a really inexpensive city to live in. I don't leave the house much, so I don't need that much from a city, just an apartment, a nearby pharmacy, a couple of movie theaters, and a train station. Oh and it has to be large enough to have taxicabs and a good bus system. Employment isn't an issue I need to consider, please just trust me on that. I'd prefer crime not be super high, but it's not my top concern. Taxes, housing, groceries and utility prices all need to be as low as possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Perhaps a small city in NE PA like the Stroudsburgs or Easton may work. For something bigger, Allentown, Bethlehem, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre could be options.
Check out Wilmington DE, specifically the North Wilmington area just across the river from downtown Wilmington. Wilmington is a small city but has a decent bus system, taxis and easy access to NYC via Amtrak or even SEPTA to NJ Transit connections which while longer are a good bit cheaper. There's also BoltBus or MegaBus service out of Philly's 30th Street Station (easily accessible via train from Wilmington) with frequent very inexpensive service to NYC (around $13). You'll find a good selection of desirable apartments around $800 a month as well. Wilmington does have a high crime rate but it's largely isolated to southside neighborhoods you'll not want to spend any time in or have reason to go to.
