I'm an "Engineer" (though the past few months would rather me be referred to as a "Programmer" or "Code Monkey") and I pull in a little over 40k here in Tucson. My wife is a Librarian and she makes about 40k. Tucson sucks salary-wise but it is rather cheap. We'll be moving on very soon, though.

$250,000 gets you nothing in NYC. Seriously, nothing..

I went to look at a 400 square ft studio in downtown Manhattan a week ago that was selling for $1.1 million dollars.

I've driven through Pennsylvania and it looked nice from what I remembered..

I didn't realize we were doing "family income"...I only put my own income, but to include both my parents and my own, we make around $160k...middle class comfortable lifestyle. No money problems, yet no luxuries either!

$250,000 around here gets you a big house. In our local SE Missouri paper, the most expensive house is $149,500.
Quote:
4-year-old 2800 square feet, wrap around deck, 3-5 bedroom, 2-bath, whirlpool tub, full walk-out basement, vaulted ceilings, 2 acres
For $250,000 in St. Louis you can get a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath house in the city, a 3 BR, 2.5 Bath house in Wentzville, or a 2 BR, 2 Bath loft in the Ely Walker Building on Washington Avenue Downtown. Lofts usually have less space, but they often have building amenities, like this one has a fitness center, and rooftop space, and a parking space. You can also get a 2 BR, 2 Bath unit in the Terra Cotta lofts for $242k.

That would get you a driveway in LA. Nah, just kidding. But you couldn't afford a closet with no hangers or shelves in LA for that much. Actually, make that Compton.

B] I guess I've never understood the secret, though I have to admit I've bought into the custom. [/b][/quote] Unless people judge you on that which is silly.
