I'm a 60-something divorced engineer looking for a place to hang my hat in- between disaster response assignments. The nature of my work could have me sitting home for months, or just as likely away for long periods. As such, I'm reluctant to spend much on rent or commit to long leases.

Preferences:
The west (WA, ID, MT, WY, CO, NM) or Gulf Coast (MS, LA, AL, TX)
Short apartment lease (3 month ideal, not longer than 6 mo.)
Relatively inexpensive rental (whatever that means!!)
Cable & high speed internet
One or 2 BR.
Rural OK.

At the moment I'm in a former girlfriend's apartment in Paris, but I'll be back in the States within a week and need to make some decisions.

All suggestions welcome

The west is an awesome place to live. We were in Montana for 2 years many years ago. We loved it. I think for short term Montana would be great.

Eastern Montana is pretty inexpensive. Look around the Billings area.
Wyoming could be good too.
If you're in the mood for something urban, Austin is one of the cheaper cities in the region.

What about smaller cities in Oregon like Eugene and Corvallis? Or in Washington like Spokane? Denver is one of my favorite cities. It's cheap to me because I'm from LA, but not so much to others.
