I've always thought Pennsylvania's were cool because they use the little keystone symbol. It's nice to see that repeated on license plates, the route signs, etc. Also nothing wrong with the simple ones used by MA, ME, CT, NJ, MS, DE, KY. I mean it's just a road sign, it doesn't have to be cool or special. It's not like anyone really genuinely cares what the signs look like, as long as they're legible and obvious.

I'm rather partial to the bloated, cartoonish caricature of the state itself used by Alabama (and some others). It makes for quick and easy identification of where and what you are on. Anything more or less than that and it seems like they are trying to hard to be cool or just too bland.

I would probably have to go with Pennsylvania, given that theirs are shaped like a keystone, in honor of PA being nicknamed the Keystone State. It's pretty classy and is instantly recognizable as being from that state.

I'm not a huge fan of Utah's (shaped like a beehive), but I do have to admit that it's unique, and it too plays off the state's nickname. Same with Kansas' sunflower.

Someone mentioned California's (which was copied by Hawaii), but it doesn't do a thing for me. It's hardly more creative than just a plain old circle.

I generally agree. A unique shape is kinda cool, but some (Colorado, Idaho, etc) seem to distract your eye from the route number, and isn't that the point of the sign to begin with?

Also, I thought Tennessee route signs were inverted triangles. When did they change them?

Any state where the shield is shaped like the state:

Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Ohio, Arizona, Nevada, and South Dakota are states that immediately come to mind.

I like when states incorporate their state shape into them, Texas does it for their farm market roads. Alabama's doesn't work because they have to shave Northern Alabama out.

I also like South Carolina, Washington State, and New Mexico.

The old Colorado state highway shields were rectangular, black on white, with Colo. at the top. The current signs are certainly an improvement.
