Minneapolis, if that's big enough for you.

Nashville is/was for a while. I think it was more affordable in the past but if you look in the 'burbs, there are still deals to be had.

Easily Cincinnati--this beautiful, charming city provides a low COL with many cultural amenities and a large corporate presence. It's truly a stand out in the Midwest!

Omaha and Des Moines are always in the top for standard of living (wages versus cost of living ). Both cities desperately need workers as job expansions exceed population growth. And both cities are growing above the national average.

Nashville and Austin TX parts of South Florida/Miami other than Miami Beach.. areas in Broward and parts of Palm Beach county. Chicago offers a lot but it is a bit costly but still cheaper than NYC, SF, LA and other elite cities.

Chicago is a big spread-out city and much of it is still very blue-collar. It's not like SF or something which is mostly white collar.

What is "medium to large sized" or "fairly large"??

Chicago and Philly are obvious for the largest and most urban tier.
Down just a notch in size, you could consider Atlanta and Minneapolis, another notch or two, Denver, Pittsburgh and Cincy.
Down a notch in urbanity, Dallas, and another notch, Houston.
