Well, if it's a large state like Texas or California or a long peninsula like Florida, then maybe you don't have to leave it that often for a vacation.
Insular, fearful? Do you know people like this or are you one of them?
That seriously sounds like my old boss. He was very proud of the fact that he had only ever left the state once in his life. He was a great guy, I just never got that particular aspect of him.
Depends on which state. Some states are so wonderful there's no need to leave. Take California, for instance. You want mountains? Desert? Beach? Redwoods? National parks? Rodeos? Cowboys? Hippies? Wine festivals? Big cities? Small towns? Perfect weather? We got it all :-)
Other states, however, are worth leaving as quickly as possible...
The first never left Minnesota until his mid-30's, when his girlfriend (now wife) brought him to Chicago to visit me. That still stands as his only trip outside Minnesota. For him, the issue was mostly lack of money, coupled with a lack of desire. He grew up very poor, and is also very shy in demeanor.
Another friend's husband made it until his late-30's without leaving the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. For him, the reason was extreme anxiety and fear (he had a traumatic, abusive childhood), and the idea of being someplace unfamiliar was terrifying. But, his wife was able to successful coax him to visit Minneapolis.
I prefer to vacation within my state of SC. Go over the border into NC mountains or beach area around Wilmington every now and again. SC has everything I need and like.
Beautiful lakes including lakes with mountain backdrops and clear water. Marinas. Beaches. Historic cities. Fall color. Spanish moss. Vibrant downtown areas. Waterfalls. Mountains. College football. New restaurants and stores going up all over. Golf courses all over. Tennis courts all over. Nice weather most of the year.

Even when it comes to a diverse state like California, I don't understand the sentiment of "there's no need to leave;" as diverse as California is, it doesn't have it all. This is a big country with tons of variety and it's a shame that some people don't see the value in venturing beyond their state borders.
