I am surprised by some of the metros on the least safe list. Being from Michigan, I really thought that Flint and Saginaw would have been higher on the "Most Dangerous" list. Also, I did not know that Tallahassee, Tucson, and Spokane were so bad.

Actual it does not. Everything I find from MQ appears years old and they used weird methods.
Go to the the FBI statistics which you can get in a form you can slice anyway you like.
You have to learn how it works. The Feds publish the data but don't make access simple. You need to get to the data tables and download them. 2014 is not availble until September of this year. But 2013 is available at...
Crime stats are basically worthless and utilized by those who seemingly are afraid of their own shadows. Like many, I live in a "dangerous zip code" where probably 8.5 out of 10 major crimes occur within a couple square mile section a few miles from where I live, and there is pretty much zero interaction with the residents of that area within the neighborhoods surrounding mine or common places where we shop/go to restaurants/etc. In fact my "dangerous" zip code has the best schools in my metro area and are among the very best in the state, which is contrary to the perceived information one would pick up from crime stats and clearly a detriment if choosing a place to live on that criteria alone.
It is better to look at the overall crime stats of a metropolitan area.
I disagree. Metropolitan areas cover a lot of ground, and can include both highly dangerous inner-city slums as well as highly safe suburban estates. Heck, even within the same city, crime rates can vary wildly. Baltimore has gotten a lot of bad press lately (to be sure, not entirely unjustified), but the crime experience of the Roland Park neighborhood is vastly different than that of Sandtown-Winchester, even though they are only a couple of miles apart.
I have a friend who used to live in Edmond, and he often complained about what he saw as overzealous enforcement of even petty rules on the part of the police. Looks like it paid off!
As for most dangerous, notice that New York is not on the list. Given its "Death Wish" reputation from the 1970s, it's amazing to me how much safer this city has become.
Missouri tends to rank towards the bottom when it comes to personal safety.
