Hello,i read posts on city data daily as I'm a yearly tourist to the u.s and find city data a great resource. But it seems that so many posters leave out their location on their details. Why is this?.Is it to temper east/west/north/south flame wars?.Why leave out where you reside?.I'm interested to read all the discussions and it would further help me to understand other people's points of view if I knew where they reside.I think it should be obligatory to show your location. What do people think?.
I leave mine out because though I have lived in Texas for many years, I am a former military brat and military wife and have lived in many different states and countries over my lifetime.
I don't make any secret in the forums about living in (and loving) Texas but there's a lot more to me and to my perspective than "where I live." Being from a military family and therefore knowing so many people from so many different places over the years, my mindset just doesn't place all that much importance on where a person lives right now.

That's an interesting question.
When I first joined City-Data, I saw it as a place where people discussed their locations with people from other areas. Wow, I thought that would be cool. And sometimes City-Data does do that.
But then when you come here, you often see these little flame wars breaking out. My City is better then your City or my State is better then your State blah, blah, blah. Sometimes the arguments are based on entire regions and even cross the border into Canada.
Turns out that alot of the arguments are not based on actual knowledge but on people's stereotypes. So after a while people begin to shy away from saying where they are from.

Same here. I've discovered that anonymity and discretion are pretty much the way to go on the forums.
