I too love the I-77 drive. I took it from NE Ohio (Akron) to NC this past summer and the drive through WV is priceless. Although, the driving was intense at times, especially next to trucks, yikes!!! I remember at one point looking out my driver's side window, gazing over the edge of the mountain, i felt like i was going to fall over the edge. I also liked crossing the Ohio river from Ohio to WV. Such beautiful scenery w/all the green trees and mountains, Charleston also looked pretty cool (especially seeing what i believe was the statehouse????? it had a gold roof, pretty cool looking coming out of a tunnel).
Well, since you are making us pick an *interstate* highway, I'd take I-80. Fisrt, because I like lonnnngggg drives. Second, the scenery. Starts in the NYC suburbs, within spitting distance of Manhattan, through the Appalachian mountains, across the woodlands of northern PA, across the prairies of the midwest, the high country of Wyoming, over the Rockies, along the Great Salt Lake, past Lake Tahoe and over the Cascades, and over the Bay Bridge right into downtown San Francisco! What a trip.
But I avoid the interstates unless I am in a real hurry. Otherwise, I take the US and State highways (and local roads whn I have a good map!). That's where you will find the REAL scenery.
I'm going to have to agree here. I think i-80 offers the most an interstate can offer for each region of the U.S.
Best drives IMO...I-40 through Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina, I-70 through Utah and Western Colorado, I-90 through northern Wyoming and Montana, I-94 through Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota...I-64 from Richmond to Lexington, KY, I-77 through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, and I-79 from Morgantown south to Charleston. Also have to say that I loved driving on I-68 from Hagertown, MD to Morgantown, WV. Also loved all of I-81. I-40 through Arizona and New Mexico wasn't half-bad either. Also loved I-10 in Louisiana and I-59 through Louisiana and Mississippi. I-24 through Tennessee from Nashville to Chattanooga was a fun drive as well if I recall.
We took 90 through the Dakotas to Washington a few years ago and loved that.
Another good one was 25 we took that through Wyoming and throughColorado and into New Mexico. Awesome scenery. I love the west with its rugged terrain. Great country out there.
I've only driven a few interstates from start to finish, I-59, I-12, I-49, I-45, I-66, I-55 & I-57. Of those, I pick I-66 as a favorite because of the mountains you start in and you end up looking at the White House and Washington Monument in D.C.
I-81 through Virginia is my favorite drive though.
I-93 north of Concord through the White Mountains INTO the north country in NH. On this stretch of highway you can see good examples of some alpine vegetation along with dramatic mountain views WITHOUT BILLBOARDS.
