I'm sure they are because a state dosent stop at a state line, it does but does the culture and all that comes along with it? Is there anywhere in the country where you cross over into another state and really realize you are in another state?

For instance in Eastern New Mexico, when you cross into Texas it's all the same, same people, culture, speech, scenery and all that, definitely has more in common with each other than the remainder of the state.

Just like East Texas is like Louisiana but not like the rest of the state.

At or near the border most states are very similar just due to proximity, but the rest of the state is often very different. Take NC for instance...at the SC border it's more like SC; at the TN border it's more like TN; at the VA border it's more like VA; at the GA border it's more like GA. But throughout the entire state it isn't exactly like any of the above.

NO! However that is a qualified no. Washington State's base of population is on the western side and it tends to lean liberal. Oregon to the south is a qualified yes. But here is the rub...Eastern WA and those areas outside of Portland and Eugene in Oregon are conservative. So Idaho is the wildcard. Conservative, sharing with Eastern WA, and many areas of OR that are outside Portland and Eugene. In other words, if you want conservative, just drive east from Seattle and Portland.

Indiana-Illinois is a pretty stark contrast. Indiana is poorer and more conservative, and people talk with a slight southern twang. Their roads are much worse as well. When you cross the border into Illinois it's immediately apparent-- the roads are much better, the people are more "northern" in their manners and their accents, and the people are friendlier IMO.

Chicagoland is 10% of Illinois in terms of land, and obviously 80% of it in terms of population. The vast majority of it's wide open spaces might as well be Indiana.

Missouri borders 8 states and we are not like any of them.
We are truly one of a kind.

DeSoto County, MS, is immediately south of Memphis, so it feels more like Memphis than Mississippi. I also feel like the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like a mix of Louisiana and Florida.

I'd say the most extreme example of this is New Jersey. It boarders Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware, yet it's not really like any of those three states. As discussed in prior threads, the states most like New Jersey are Connecticut and Maryland, and New Jersey does not either.

But at the border of each it looks and feels pretty similar to what is on the other side...I think that is the main thing here. The border areas are not representative of the entire state, and once you get away from the borders the similarities with bordering states becomes less and less pronounced.

West Alabama along the state border is a lot like Mississippi; the Florida panhandle is similar to the Alabama coastline, or in vice versa. Mobile also can be more related to New Orleans.
