Looking for the best state for self sustainable living. Born and raised in midwestern Wisconsin and looking for some place warmer with longer growing season for a small hobby farm. Im not a complete hippie, but i would like more of a liberal area and not too far away from a bigger city. I have children so a good school district or waldorf education available. Lots of outdoor activities available close by like trails or parks. Having a garden with a few chickens and a goat or two would be ideal. I know some of you will say Wisconsin is perfect, but i can't take the fridged winters any longer.
I think that most places with an affordable hobby farm with the climate you want are not in liberal areas, unless you consider the fact that if there's no one else for some distance, then it would be a liberal area since you're there. There are a lot of abandoned farms in northern Kentucky between Cincinnati and Louisville, and Cincinnati has a Waldorf School. They're pretty much only abandoned because factory farming doesn't work well on hilly terrain, but are completely useful for the average family farmer.

Check out rural Chatham County/Alamance County/Orange County which converge adjacent to Durham-Chapel Hill NC...in particular towns like Haw River, Saxapahaw, Mebane and Hillsborough. It's a very fertile area for agriculture, has the liberal vibe you're looking for and has access to quality schools as well as lots of outdoor recreation.
