I did not vote...tough call for me between Houston, Atlanta and New Orleans. I very much favor Asian food which makes me lean a bit toward Houston, but I'll just abstain from voting.
Its Houston. Houston has the innovation, the variety, and the diversity. No other city can quite match it in the South.

It probably has the best African food in the South, but aside from that I can't think of anything. The food in Atlanta is good, but I don't think I would give it a top five spot.

It also has great food of many other genres, including excellent Korean & Vietnamese. Of course all of the Southern regional fare can be found here, being such a crossroads for the entire South.
It's amazing how some continue to downplay Atlanta, and to question it being in the top five in the region is delusional in my opinion.

That's why I said New Orleans wins in local cuisine. Yes it has a signature that no other city in the South can match. However, when it comes to variety and diversity, Houston triumphs over New Orleans. I can understand one picking New Orleans. I can also understand one picking Houston. I picked Houston because of the variety it can offer.

Atlanta has a plethora of good Vietnamese, Italian, Carribean, African and much more. The food scene in Atlanta has really grown over the last 20 years. Atlanta has more to offer than just southern cooking, despite popular perception.
Houston, New Orleans and Dallas. The south's top three hands down.
