Texas overall but when it comes to sports nobody is more proud of their pro sports teams than Boston you see Boston sports fan in every US city you go to but thats more of a city pride than state and same could be said for Chicago.

Texas by a long shot. After Texas, I'd say California. One some may not be as aware of is Ohio. Ohioans surprisingly have a lot of pride of place for a Midwest state.

True. The level of "Michigan Pride" here can reach levels that are borderline annoying. And I am pro-Michigan myself.

In my limited experience with Wisconsin, I've gotten the impression that people there are also very fond of their state (as they should be!)

I don't have any experience with Minnesota, but I'll take your word for it.

Oregons state motto should be "everything here is slightly less than half as cool as we all say it is"

Texas' should officially be designated "the overcompensation state"

Michigan is a distant third on the "legendary in the own minds" category.

Texas - Almost a form of nationalism. While annoying, Texan pride is a verifiable cultural phenomenon. I find it hard to hate Texan pride even though I am not as smitten with the state as most of its out-of-state admirers much less real Texans.

California - A kind of supercilious braggadocio. California has some superlative qualities, but there is an undercurrent of refusal to accept that someone may find something non-Californian of value or even preferred to its Californian equivalent.

Minnesota - Minnesota is statistically a great state. I would happily live in Minnesota if I had a good opportunity there as it really has a lot going for it; vast natural beauty, effective society, nice people and solid German/Scandinavian-American culture, Native American culture, great urban areas, and the list goes on. This gives a small, but vocal, minority of Minnesotans a license to lord and promulgate themselves over the unfortunate, grey masses weeping in misery at Minnesota's feet like a cast off shroud of inferiority which Minnesota soars over like a proud, progressive eagle.

Honorable mention:

New York- New Yorkers are pretty confident that New York state is one of the greatest lands on Earth whether from NYC or upstate, urban and rural. However, for every quality that supports this position, they will tick off a laundry list of everything that makes their life miserable. Then some will talk about nothing but leaving while the majority will just plug on to live there.

You can knock Minnesotans down a notch when you tell them that their biggest export is catheters.

Which it is.

Disagree with this completely. 3 of those 4 states are absolutely near the top of any "tooting their own horn" list. Have you been to Texas or California??
