Every state has (at least I hope) a ton of state pride, but I tend to agree that it's more prevalent here than other places. Much of that is tied in with Alabama and Auburn pride (very 'neck, I know), but lately the most popular products promoting the two football teams heavily invoke state imagery. In other words, many Bama and Auburn people are wearing apparel abroad that invoke images of state pride, when really its primarily touting their college football fandom. Here's what I mean:
The 'necks have begun to flash this stuff wherever they go, and you can see the room for double interpretation thereon. These fads notwithstanding, you will find an abnormal amount of Alabama imagery on products (everything from mugs, towels, and plates to bumper stickers, clothes, and beer bottles) and within other modes of expression (tattoos, art, etc) in this state. I don't know if we're any more prideful than the next state, but I can tell you that we actively market it.
The ones we really laugh at are the few over-the-top Floriduh honks, considering the rest of the country feeds on daily laughs from "Florida Man" and all the idiocy there.
It's not just a twitter handle, it's a global term for the daily outsized onslaught of idiocy from a certain segment of the state's population.
"A Florida man today...."
...was caught making out with a horse
...took pcp and ran through traffic
...robbed a store with a squirtgun and was knocked unconscious slipping on a patch of water in the act
And so on. People noticed it was "a Florida man" by a much greater percentage than anywhere else, and the joke turned into a cultural phenomenon. For many who have never been there, "Florida Man" has become their picture of the state.
My beautiful Louisiana!
Be it hurricanes, floods, oil spills, a tough climate, swamps, crime, poverty, we tenaciously cling to this beloved land.
The culture and uniqueness throughout the state is definitely a source of deep pride and identity.
