Moving from California, best route to take over the rocky mountains? (safety, moving to)

I'm in San Luis Obispo, and I'm going to be moving to the Twin Cities, Mn area in January, driving the whole way. Does anyone know the best (mix between safety and speed) way to drive for someone inexperienced in snow driving, specifically over the rocky mountains? Thanks for any help.

I think the best, least snowy route would be taking I-10, at least until you get over the Rockies. We were thinking about taking a trip to Kentucky around that time too (from Los Angeles). I have no real experience driving in snow either.

I agree with above post....I-10 would be easiest and least likely to see any snow at all...then head north and east toward MSP.

I-10 is WAY too far south. You're going to be heading to El Paso.

I would suggest I-40 and then hit I-35 north through KC and toward MN. Depending on what time of the year you are going to drive out there, you are still going to be far enough south to avoid major snow. But, like it or not, once you get up toward MN, you are likely to hit snow.

The other option would be I-15 to I-70 through Denver, but you would be much more likely to hit snow going through the Rockies that way.
