I've been traveling around lately, and I'm surprised at how many cities don't have many dive bars. However, I've never really been up north much at all, and I've heard that some of those cities have many dive bars.
Which cities in your experience have a lot of dive bars per capita?
That Wisconsin map is pretty amazing actually. I recall years ago one of those places rated books said Green Bay had the largest number of bars per person or bars per square mile or something like that. Doesn't really answer the questsion about dive bars, and I'd like to hear what a dive bar is. I know places like Chicago and Milwaulkee have or used to have a lot of neighborhood taverns, but they don't seem quite to a possible definition of "dive" as a low drinking resort.
Not sure about the dive part of it, but the large cities with the most bars per-capita are:
1. Pittsburgh
2. St. Louis
3. Cleveland
4. Cincinnati
5. Milwaukee
6. Orlando
7. Vegas
8. Portland, OR
9. Omaha
10. Buffalo
Unfortunately I lost the link to the study, but kept the info in a text file. Maybe someone else has the link?
I'm really surprised Boston is not on the list....must be where the "per capita" thing comes in. When I visited there, they had bars like Seattle had coffee shops.
New Orleans had the most bars per capita in 2012. That'd be a serious drop off if it wasn't in the top 10!
