I would imagine Portland, Maine having a lot more to do than any of them. It is big league after all.

The largest ones, in order, have the most things to do.

LA, Chicago, SF, Atlanta, Seattle, and so on. It's a pretty simple answer.

My kneejerk reaction is to say Portland, ME. It just seems like the right answer here.

Why is Portland, Maine even on this list?

I would say Chicago but might be biased based on my recent vacation. I won't make fun of Portland, Maine because it might be the most beautiful (or Maine might be the most beautiful state on this list).

Ummm....you didn't know? Portland, Maine is like a hardcore city. They have lobster in great abundance there! What more do you need out of life?

Ok, sarcasm turning down, it is indeed a very beautiful harbor city. Portland Head Lighthouse and the rocky headland it's on is gorgeous. As far as things to do, it would probably be fairly similar to Seattle given they are both chilly northern coastal burgs, they both have the Portland/LL Bean and Seattle/REI outdoor culture that range from mountain to coastal recreation and all that entails.

Washington has more superlatives it that regard, sure. However Maine is by far the most rugged and remote state in the Northeast. One might also prefer the easy access to cities like Boston, NYC, Montreal, and Quebec City over Vancouver, Victoria and the other Portland. Just depends on what one likes to do. As far as having a good range of things to do, Portland, Maine is located in a very decent area/region.

Houston has a ton to do and there are major cities only a couple hours away, and a beach!
