I'm rather curious. What places in the United States do you consider a hidden gem. A place that surprised you in how awesome it is. It could be a place that is just beautiful or a place with a lot to do.

I wouldn't call STL a hidden gem, but it is certainly underrated

Both Omaha and Kansas City were pleasant surprises for me. Something about being on the river. The excellent food and BBQ in KC. Omaha, despite occasionally being dissed as "vanilla", is actually quite lovely with beautiful neighborhoods and very friendly people. Like many places, people make assumptions on what others say. Find out for yourself.

I have heard that about both these cities. They were on my relocation list. I didn't wind up in either one but definitely plan to visit each one day. I did spend some time in K.C but that was back in the 70's. I'm sure it's changed since then.

I grew up in Wisconsin, but lived the last 18 years in Oregon. I loved Oregon!

But this last May, I moved back to Wisconsin. I am surprised how green this state is! It's truly greener than Oregon. By green, I mean trees, plants, etc. I was shocked.

Ferndale, CA---a small Victorian town on the ocean, great stores and a cool hilltop cemetery
Mt. Shasta, CA---a small new-age town, 100 degrees in summer but the surrounding mountains still have snow

I agree with Dinsdale - both Charleston WV and Knoxville TN are hidden jewels.

Hot Springs Village between Hot Springs and Little Rock, AR is a little known secret and is beautiful!

Fort Worth is much more appealing to me than Dallas.

I was very surprised and impressed with both OKC and Springfield Missouri. Springfield was especially charming (I think the people of OKC were who really impressed me - some of the friendliest people I've ever met).

Tyler, Texas is a particularly beautiful small Texas city with close proximity to many larger metro areas - not that you have to visit them often, though, because the shopping and dining and entertainment options in Tyler are really impressive, especially for a city of it's size.
