I moved to the Kansas City area 5 years ago from the southeast. With that move, I left behind all my family. I only get to see them once a year. It didn't bother me for the first few years, but I REALLY miss them now. My grandparents are getting older, as are my parents.
I've been thinking of moving to the Atlanta area in the spring. I would be a lot closer to family (only 6.5hr away), so long weekend trips would be easily manageable. I'm currently about 15hr away, so that's definitely not possible except during longer vacation periods.
The only issue is that I really like my job here, I like the people here, I like the students I have (I teach high school), and I like the area in general.
No idea how I would like Atlanta. I run the risk of hating the traffic, the school I would be working at, and having students with terrible behavior problems.
I really have no clue what to do, but I'm sure many people have been in this situation before. What did you do?
The problem is that flying adds up quickly, especially with the wife. Also, I HATE flying and would much rather drive. However, I don't enjoy driving more than 10hrs.
Well, it obviously bothers you enough that you are contemplating a move. I think the real key here is how your wife feels about moving?! If you two are not on the same page it is definitely not worth moving, in my opinion. You think it's difficult now?!!!!

My wife is open to anything. She generally likes where we live now, but would enjoy living in a larger city like Atlanta. Her family lives closer to Atlanta than where we live now. It sounds like a win win situation.

It sounds like a move back to Atlanta is in the cards for you guys. You can always visit SD, but home is definitely where the heart is and if your heart is with your family then I say do it. Good luck!
