Though I did go to one in Fredericksburg, VA, on my way to the Outer Banks that was actually very nice. It was one of those Super Stores so it sold everything from groceries to beach gear to guns and machetes. You could buy almost everything there. And it was actually nice. It wasn't a mess, it was modern and clean. I was impressed.
We went to grab some groceries for a family trip to Duck, NC, because it was right near the hotel we stayed at overnight in VA. Literally right down the street so we bought a bunch of food for 14 people for the week. Not a bad experience, but most of my other Walmart experiences haven't been so nice so I tend to avoid at all costs.
It would be interesting to see it broken down by population or density or something because, while I think Walmart is a thing more popular in the South and Midwest overall, a huge state like TX will naturally have more than a smaller one like Maryland, for example.

Interesting that despite only 45 in our whole state, there are two within 6 miles, both within the city of Bellevue, an upscale area with median family income $88,000, home price $624,000.
Texas having the most and that many as well does not surprise me one bit.
