Hmm, state wise that's a hard choice. The Chicagoland area is the only reason I happen to live in Illinois.

My ranking is:

1) Chicago
2) Michigan
.
.
.
3) Illinois

Since Chicago is in Illinois, and you can't just remove a state's largest city at a whim, I choose Illinois. But I also choose Illinois because I think there are very nice areas along the Mississippi and the Shawnee, the way Peoria is nestled into the Illinois river valley, I really like Galena, I like the vast open spaces of the prairie, I like the Lincoln-era history, the Native American history outside of St. Louis, and the proximity of Illinois to the St. Louis area.

Michigan definitely tops Illinois for natural beauty...but that's all I got for Michigan. Oh, Ann Arbor is nice.

Where in Illinois does the scenery compare to the UP?

Well, by your posts you seem to have Illinois figured out so well so why bother?

Actually that is a good question. I would like to know where in IL there is anything like the UP as well.

Having lived in both Illinois - hands down. Michigan is pretty on the west side of the state and north of grayling. Illinois is pretty along the Illinois river. Along the Mississippi and to the far south. In the end Chicago beats Detroit with absolutely no comparison. Sorry Michigan

Also, there's more to Illinois than Chicago. I really haven't heard anyone bring up cities like Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, Carbondale, Springfield, East St. Louis, and Cairo. How do these areas compare to Michigan's cities?
Hmmmm Flint , Battle Creek , Jackson, Saginaw. And drum roll please Detroit.

Lol,

lets just agree on this

Natural scenery goes to Michigan.... Urban scenery goes to Illinois. Now we can all be happy
