Chicago and Philly do seem like good choices for you. I am biased and think Chicago is a great city. Its job market is healthy, housing is much more affordable than NYC. Humidity in Chicago is somewhat high, but lower than the east coast cities. Public transportation is robust and easy to use. There are even new Divvy Bike stations everywhere, and much of the downtown has recently added superb bike lanes.
Judging by what you said you needed, Chicago and Philadelphia.
I mean, you are really limited in the U.S. if you want good public transportation. If you're more flexible around that requirement, you have more options. To give you an idea of what it's like in one city out here in the hinterlands (Phoenix), we have buses every half hour (every twenty minutes on the busiest streets), which of course stop every block and are much slower than a train or taxi. We also have limited light rail in a small portion of the valley. I think you'll find a lot of American cities are more or less like us, and not much like New York. The transportation part of your original post is probably why a lot of people went with Philadelphia and Chicago right off the bat.
I'm not sure how good the public transportation is in San Diego, although most people seem to like the city for other reasons.
I wish we had better public transportation here, but if it were the most important requirement for me there would be only a few places in the country I could live. Best.
This. If you find better transit than NY or Chicago, you're in Europe.
My wife and I are both in our mid twenties and currently live in NYC. We have a love-hate relationship with the city and are very excited to leave and find somewhere else to call home. The cost of living here is just so high and we don't take advantage of the city as much as other people do.
We have both argued over and over on finding a new home but still cant decide so im gonna see if anyone on here can help!
Here are a few things we are looking for...
- Mid to large size city. Not looking for small towns or rural communities
- COL must be manageable. We have kind of ruled out San Fran, Boston and LA
- Dog friendly. We have a pit bull so that knocks off Denver from our list
- No extreme humidity. NYC summer humidity is the highest we can go
- Can't be too raining or cloudy. I once lived in Vancouver, Canada and found myself depressed in the winter
- Good transportation system. Would prefer not to buy a second car
I'll also point out that my wife works in ad sales for a media company and is looking to stay in her field. I have worked numerous of jobs and will be down to try something new. The next city we move to isn't our end game so we aren't looking to buy a house or settle down there. We just want a place we can enjoy for the next 3-5 years.

If you're looking for a 3 to 5 year plan and a place where you can live a good bit more comfortably (and travel for instance) perhaps check out a city like Cleveland which (believe it or not) fulfills all of your criteria at a bargain price. It's a surprisingly vital city with lots of young professionals, fun/thriving in-town neighborhoods, similar weather, it's largely dog-friendly and has a very good rail/transit system.
