I think certain parts of Virginia is southern, but probably not as southern as Oklahoma.

Maryland and Delaware are blue states. Also, several Northern States are red so your argument is flawed.

PA is a swing state that went red in the last presidential election, so that pokes even more holes in that person's argument.

That's an overly simplistic way of looking at it, especially based on this last presidential election.

I don't think Oklahoma holds a candle to Virginia as "southern" simply because all we have is the poor dirt farmer southern component. We are pretty short on the cultured part of southern living which Virginia basically developed through the centuries.

We have some frontier southern, a little bit of appalachia/ozark style southern and a smidge of the deep south "river" culture southern but you ain't gonna find much in the way of plantations around these parts.

I'm surprised this is a debate. Virginia was the freaking capital of the Confederacy. Yes, Oklahoma is farther south, but Virginia is/was ground zero for a lot of southern culture. Oklahoma is one of the most regionless states in the country and is far more frequently associated with other regions (west or Midwest) than Virginia is.

CityData is the only place where people question whether or not Virginia is southern. Oklahoma certainly has southern characteristics, but Virginia is a definitive Southern state.
